Protecting Pipes From Freezing in Georgia
Before a hard freeze, insulate exposed pipes, disconnect garden hoses, keep the heat on, and let a faucet on an outside wall drip. Know where your main water shut-off valve is: if a pipe bursts, close it first, then call a licensed plumber.
Before a hard freeze
- Insulate pipes in unheated spaces: crawl spaces, garages, attics and exterior walls.
- Disconnect and drain garden hoses, and cover outdoor spigots.
- Keep the heat on, even if you are away.
- On the coldest nights, let a faucet on an outside wall drip, and open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls.
- Find your main water shut-off valve now, before you need it.
If a pipe bursts
- Close the main water shut-off valve.
- If water is near outlets or appliances, turn off electricity to that area if you can do so safely.
- Photograph the damage for your insurer, then call a plumber.
Check the license
Plumbing is licensed by the State Construction Industry Licensing Board under Title 43, Chapter 14. Ask for the license number and look it up yourself.
